Fever is something that every child will experience as they grow up. Whenever the baby has a fever, the parents are very worried. They want to lower the temperature quickly, for fear that the high fever will burn the baby's brain...

In fact, the general fever does not burn the brain. Fever that may "burn the brain" is more common in encephalitis and meningitis.

Fever is only a symptom. The cause of fever is the key point. Don't be frightened by the temperature. What's worse than fever is "fever phobia". Everyone should be rational!

[Fever temperature]

Fever is when the body temperature is higher than normal.

Normal body temperature does not have an absolute degree. Everyone's normal body temperature will be slightly different, and it will also be affected by many factors. It will change at different times, seasons, environments, and current activities. There are also differences in the temperature of various parts of the body.

Therefore, to determine whether you have a fever, it is best to compare the body temperature under the same conditions at ordinary times.

[Causes of fever]

Fever is a symptom of illness. It may also be a reaction after vaccination. There are many reasons for fever. The most common are viral infections and bacterial infections. Fever means that the body's immune system is operating normally to fight foreign germs.

If the baby has a fever after receiving the vaccine, it usually recovers after 2-3 days. There is no need to worry too much. Parents should carefully check the baby's body temperature during the process. If the body temperature exceeds 38.5℃, you can consider taking antipyretics. If fever persists for more than 3 days, the baby should be sent to the hospital for examination as soon as possible.

If the baby does not have a fever because of the vaccination, it means that he is sick. Take the baby to the hospital to check the cause of the illness.

[Teething does not cause fever!]

Many mothers often ask me, What should I do if my baby has a fever while teething? In fact, the baby does not have a fever because of teething!

Body temperature will rise slightly during teething, but fever will not occur. However, because babies like to bite objects when they are teething, it is easy to increase the chance of bacterial infection, they will have a fever, and they may also cause problems such as diarrhea.

[Fever is good for the body?]

People have always been deeply ingrained in the belief that if you have a fever, you should treat it, but in fact, you should treat the cause of the fever, not the fever itself, because fever is just a reaction of the body, which means that the immune system is working.

Infants and toddlers will have a fever much more frequently than adults. The reason is that their immune system is imperfect, and bacteria or viruses that have not been exposed to it are likely to cause infection, so they are prone to fever.

The baby’s immune system is constantly improving in the process of contact with germs. After getting sick again and again, the immune system will get better and better. As the child grows up, the frequency of fever will become less and less, so fever is the growth of the child. Inevitable in the process!

[When to see a doctor?]

Babies within three months

For babies less than 3 months old, fever must be paid attention to. Because at this age, especially during the newborn period (0-28 days), more than 10% of fevers are caused by serious infections, such as pneumonia, bacteremia, and meningitis.

The baby's normal body temperature is within 37.5 degrees under the armpit, within 38 degrees in the rectum, and within 37.5 degrees in the eardrum.

If you find that your baby's body temperature is only a little bit higher than the normal range, it is recommended to see a doctor to treat as soon as possible to avoid aggravation.

Baby over three months

A baby within 3 months may have a severe fever, but not the same situation for a baby older than 3 months, because fever means that the baby's body is fighting infection and is a process of strengthening immunity.

If you find that your child over 3 months has a fever, you can observe it at home. It is very important to judge the child's mental state. If he is in good spirits, you may not need to see a doctor for the time being; If he is in a bad state, you should see a doctor.

In any case, if the baby is found to have the following conditions, he should be taken to the hospital immediately:

  • Convulsions appear;
  • Red rash on the body;
  • Depressed mental state;
  • Reluctance to suck or eat;
  • Persistent fever;
  • Dehydration, such as dry mouth, no tears when crying, sickness on the face, sunken eyeballs or fontanelle, etc.;
  • You feel worried and upset...

[How to cure baby fever]

In addition to following the doctor's treatment or prescription, it is also important to follow the correct treatment to care for a infant with fever.

Measure body temperature

If you want to know whether your baby has a fever, you can take his temperature every four hours. Commonly used temperature detectors for infants and toddlers include electronic thermometers, infrared ear thermometers, and infrared forehead thermometers.

[Infrared Ear Thermometer]

Although the price is more expensive, it is the most convenient and fastest way to measure body temperature. I personally think it is most suitable for babies;

[Digital Thermometer]

It is recommended that armpit detection is the safest, and it is suitable for babies under 3 months. Babies older than 3 months are less likely to use electronic thermometers to measure in the armpits for a long time.

[Mercury thermometer]

Easy to break and leak toxic mercury, it should not be used by infants!

In addition, it is not recommended for infants and young children to use oral heat detection. Anal detection has the risk of damaging the intestines, which is not acceptable to everyone, nor do I personally recommend it.

1. Oral antipyretics

Prepare baby fever remedies in case you need it, "acetaminophen" or "ibuprofen" (common drug names: Tylenol, Merlin), which are currently recognized as safe and effective anti-fever medicine in the world. Only consider taking anti-fever medicines if the body temperature is above 38.5 degrees. There is no need to take the medicine temporarily if the child is in good spirits; but contrarily, if the child’s mental state is not good, please follow the doctor’s prescription to take the medicine, regardless of the frequency, amount, and method of taking.

2. Increase or decrease clothes appropriately

When your baby has a fever, put on appropriate clothes to prevent overheating or cold. Clothing should be mainly cotton, easy to absorb sweat. After sweating, change wet clothes immediately.

3. Keep indoor air circulation

You can open windows, air conditioners or fans to circulate the indoor air to make your baby more comfortable. Do not direct the wind against your baby.

4. Supplement moisture

Unless it is a super fever or other underlying diseases, the fever will not harm your child. Fever will make the body lose water, so you need to add the proper amount of water to your baby. Therefore, when the body temperature is not too high, you can encourage your baby to drink plenty of water, milk, and breast milk to add water.

Because breast milk itself contains sufficient water, it is sufficient to increase the frequency of breastfeeding when a baby who takes breast milk has a fever.

Parents should pay attention to whether the baby is dehydrated. If you notice any signs of dehydration or you feel worried, you should send him to a doctor immediately.

5.adequate rest

If your child has a fever, he will be more tired. It is recommended to stay at home and take a good rest. It is not suitable to take him out to play or go to school. Fever will slow down the digestion of the stomach. Therefore, the diet should be light and easy to digest during fever.

6. Warm bath

Warm baths will not help your baby bring down a fever, but when the following situations occur, you can choose to soak your baby in a warm bath to make him more comfortable:

  • Cannot take oral medications
  • Vomiting after taking medicine
  • Be irritable or very unwell

Warm bath care method:

  • Let your baby sit in a tub filled with warm water and shower with a towel for about 5-10 minutes.
  • If your baby starts to tremble or the water temperature turns cold, take him away from the bathtub immediately.

Please noted that, do not use cold water or alcohol to reduce the temperature! This will make the baby chill and tremble, and make the body temperature rise instead of falling.
